BEDEUTET DIE
LEITZ-LEICA-KAMERALEICA
The yardstick for optical
l l E H A precision, Leica has revc
tionized photography.
It quickly acquired worlc
wide fame, and its triumphal march since then is unmatched. Os
Barnack, the inventor of the Leica, was an enthusiastic photo-
grapher himself. For a long time he used a 13 by 18 cm view
camera, but recalled: I had to lug much equipment during my
Sunday hikes in the Thuringian forests. Whenever I climbed to
peaks, I thought the following: Is there no other way?
He concluded that there must be a way to make large pictures f
small negatives. He found the solution when he worked with a
built cinematographic camera for which he established the preci
exposure times with a small camera housing. This forerunner o
Leica led him to the 24 by 36 mm size, which corresponded to t
cinematographic frames.
Today, the 35 mm format commands the lions share of the pho
graphic market. The spectrum encompasses basic models and hi
quality precision cameras with extensive lists of accessories.
Many amateurs and almost all professional photographers could
utilize the possibilities offered by a modern small-picture camera
system. Such a system offered fast, simple operation in a light
weight camera. These advantages were quickly realized by those
who had to take newspictures and snapshots - dynamic photo-
graphs - and they are as important today as they were 50 years a
when the first Leica appeared on the market.
